This blog acts like a third place that only includes our discussion section, provided that we all have access to a computer. It excludes people from other discussion sections, from other classes, and from other communities as a whole. I think this blog will create a comfortable atmosphere for the small number of us to clarify readings, discussions, lectures, etc. referring to this course... along with a comfortable way for us to raise our participation grade... that comfort makes this blog "a home away from home" in a small community setting, if that's what you wish to call it.
Lisa, I figured I'd go right ahead and comment on your blog because I thought it was really clever how you tied in our discussion blog to some of the critera of a third place that we talked about in class. Also, I definately think this aspect of the course creates a comfortable way to participate in the class and offers a "home away from home."
ReplyDeleteI agree that blogs exclude others not in our discussion section. it also excludes those who don't have computer access. It can also be comfortable because you can blog at the location of your choice. However, i do not agree that blogging is "a home away from home." Blogging can be done at your home. You don't have to get out of the house in order to blog. Blogging is about as much home away from home as watching T.V.
