blog as a third place

I think that this blog can be a third place in some respects, and not in others. It allows our class to express our opinions freely without confrontation. It's an exclusive blog however, because it does only apply to our class. So as far as a wider range of opinions from other people, it does not include that. I wouldn't necessarily call this a 'home away from home' atmosphere because I definitely will not be blogging that much in my free time as though it 'makes me feel at home' but it's a comfortable place to talk about things you maybe wouldn't say to someones face (even though they'll just read it later).

  1. I agree with the fact that this blog functions as a "semi-third" place concerning the aspects of including everyone in the class and trying to provide a neutral atmosphere. And at the same time, I can't help but wonder if there is really is a "perfect" third place? The Seattle Public Library was a third place in some respects, but did not fit all the criteria. Most of all the other third places we talked about, other libraries, bowling leagues, rotary clubs, bridge clubs and so on, did not all technically qualify as perfect third place, but does that mean they are any less significant? Whether or not this blog or any of those other organizations function as a third place should not be dwelled upon so much as the fact that if they can appeal and help the general population while fitting some of the third place criteria.
