Group 3 Video

Here's our video. We started out interviewing people, asking them how important the internet was in their lives... then we had a revelation, and we decided to try living without the internet (except for Learn @ UW and WiscMail) for three days to see what's it's like for people who don't have the same access we do.

The group members were Emily Kesner, Max Lohnhardt, Will Mayberry, Megan Moore, Lisa Moser, and Sara Newhouse.

  1. so we all went out and did interviews and asked questions to people, we took some filler shots, and then we decided to show ourselves trying to go 3 days without the internet for reasons other then wisc things. so i personally went out and interviewed the old part time student lol, and recorded myself giving up (on purpose) for the assignment recording. i had to leave the group early one day to go to class so i couldnt make it in the little group talk thing

  2. For the video project, my involvement included participation in brainstorming ideas as to what we were going to do for the video, actually going out and using the flipcam, interviewing random people on the street, and meeting with the group to decide how we wanted to bring all of it together. This is when we decided that we were going to go without internet for three days, and I participated in this experiment. I had fun with this project, and I know my groupmates did, too. We all worked together and contributed something to this video. I'm happy with how it turned out.

  3. I really enjoyed making our video about how difficult it is to be without the Internet. My role in the making of the video included brainstorming ideas, asking people the questions for our interviews, and filming my own attempt to go without the Internet. Sarah should receive a lot of credit for our video as she put everything together and did the editing as the rest of us had little experience with editing. This project really gave me a feel for what it is like for people on the other side of the digital divide who have limited or no access to technology and the Internet. I was surprised by the number of things I use the Internet for without even realizing it. For students, it would be almost impossible to not have Internet access as it is essential for communication and makes research much more efficient. Overall, this project was a great learning experience and a fun way to interact with people in our discussion.

  4. My role in making the video was a little bit of interviewing and a little bit of brainstorming, but mostly it was the editing.

Like Will said, the project really made me think about people who don't have access to the internet. It was hard for me to live without it, but it's what so many people do each day. Things that we take for granted, like going on Facebook or checking the news online, are things that people on the other side of the digital divide don't get to do. It was really interesting to see how dependent I am on a technology that many people don't have access to.

  5. We started off wanting to interview college students and how important they thought the internet was in their everyday lives. However, after interviewing a variety of people, undergraduate students, graduate students, parents and other adults we confirmed what we already knew to be true- the internet is very important to college students in this day and age. Our group thought that by involving ourselves we could show how truly vital the internet is in a more personal way. All of our group had seen and most of us had been watching the MTV show "College Life," primarily because it is taking place at our school. We thought we could reach out to people in our class by doing a parody of the show and by also providing entertainment. I filmed the interviews and also helped with the brainstorming of the project. I realized throughout this process that I use the internet a lot more than I thought and mostly for things that help me procrastinate instead of actually helping me do work. When I was without the sites I usually went on I definitely had an easier time managing my time and getting my work done.
